Recently, the Spanish journalist Héctor Llanos Martínez (who writes for the Spanish newspaper El País) visited me in Kyoto to interview me about Shōgun. One of the places I showed him and other European journalists was Nijō Castle, which I used as an example to explain to the art department of the TV show how palaces were built in 1600. The sets of the palace in Shōgun, with the ceremonial assembly hall and Toranaga’s quarters, are all based on the Ninomaru Palace in Nijō Castle. We also talk about the interaction between Japan and the West, the code of the samurai, seppuku, Osaka Castle and garden ponds. An English version of the article is published online.
