As a professor of Japanese history at the International Research Centre for Japanese Studies in Kyoto, I have been researching the Sengoku period, and in particular the lives of Tokugawa Ieyasu, William Adams and Hosokawa Gracia. Coincidentally, these three historical figures are the three main characters of the TV series Shōgun, for which I was responsible for supervising all the historical aspects. In this podcast, I talk to host Emily Yoshida about the historical background of seppuku and the real-life counterparts of each of the main characters.
